Missing The Girls

On day three of my "vacation" I am missing my girls.

AE was not afraid of the fireworks on the Fourth. Unlike her mother, she has no qualms about holding fire.

HJ and The Crazy Dog

Toot Toot

That's the sound of me tooting my own horn!

I am a winner. I won.

What did I win? Hmmmmmmm.

Oh, that's right. The Crazy Dog is the real winner.

I won a CUTE new collar for The Crazy Dog from LuckyFiona.

Oh, you know you want one! After perusing the selections, I know my favorites, but The Daddy is afraid our boy dog will look too girly.

I'm not afraid. No, I am not!

I'm partial to The Orange Creamsicle.

Remember, I'm from Tennessee and The Daddy's an Auburn fan, so I think that might be a good compromise! Can't you just see The Crazy Dog with his shiny chocolate fur against the cuteness of that collar? I thought so!

Thanks again, Lindy!

Uh, I Really DO Sew...

So the other day when I clicked on the category that said, "Sewing" I was surprised. I was sure I had showed you some things I've done around the house or for the girls! In the ONE post under sewing, there wasn't even a picture! I just TALKED about sewing. For one brief second.

Although come to think of it, you HAVE SEEN a few of my other projects. Like these dresses here. And these dresses here. And a close up of a dress here.

When asked if I can sew, I usually say, "I have done it before" because I am NO SEAMSTRESS. I have plenty of friends who have done so many cute things like curtain panels, pillows, duvet covers, dresses, john-johns, roman shades, and the list goes on...

So here is my latest project:
It's a table runner: the easiest project in sewing!

Notice how I've highlighted our GORGEOUS and LIGHTLY DISTRESSED kitchen table courtesy of the crazy dog. It's surely my fault for leaving the girls' uneaten dinners on the table in the afternoons and then proceeding to take them for a "sanity walk." Oh, you don't know about sanity walks?

A sanity walk occurs when the girls aren't eating much of their dinners. We get up from the table. We get in the stroller with drinks and snacks that they'll actually eat. Then I push them around the neighborhood until I get my sanity back.

So in the heat of insanity brought on by my little food strikers, I tend to leave the plates full of food in place on the kitchen table. Open invitation for the crazy dog to strike.

So all those "distress" marks are courtesy of his front paws. I have considered placing the plates on the other end of the table to "even out" the damage. If there are "distress" marks ALL OVER THE TABLE v. JUST TWO SIDES, maybe it'll look intentional?

Soooooo, the table runner is reversible. I made it with leftover fabric from AE's big girl room in our old house. When we moved here, I started over with a more logical pink. Just about finished with her room. We can take a tour when it's done. I promise.

Here's a tour of the nursery where HJ currently resides. Next month is the beginning of her big girl room transition. You know, since she's TWO now. I've got a couple of BIG projects planned for her room, so stay tuned. For the next two or three months!

But We LOVE Him

Since we've had some warmer weather, the crazy dog has had plenty of outdoor time. The grass is still brown, but some green IS poking through.

If you click on the pictures, you can see Mr. Crazy Bailey UP CLOSE and PERSONAL. My favorite is the second picture. Head on. Crazy eyes. Gotta love him.

The Late Edition

To be short, we've had a big day.

Final preparations for company to come in town.

Birthday party for Jesus at our friend, George's house.

Lunch time and naps back at the homestead.

Christmas Eve church services.

Christmas Eve dinner at Nana and Papa's house with the whole family.

Christmas light decorations tour on the way back to the homestead.

Wake up A.E. to put cookies and milk out for Santa.

H.J. was a trooper and stayed up all the way home, despite the late 9:00 hour.

Put cookies out.

Put girls to bed.

Come back downstairs.

Santa had already come and eaten all the cookies.

(PLATE FULL OF COOKIES+CRAZY DOG= DUMB PARENTS)

Yes, the crazy dog has struck again! He explained that he was just helping us with our diets.

Have a Merry Christmas, ya'll!

Mother, I Have to go POTTY!

You may know (or not) that I am NOT Phillips Phamily Mama at home. I am MOTHER. A.E. has pretty much transformed me into a 50's housewife. I only have Disney to blame: Peter Pan and Bambi, to be exact. Every once in a while, it's Mommy, but more and more, I'm MOTHER. She does sound proper, even if it's in the context of, "Mother, maybe one more Little Bear/I just tooted/I want more!"

H.J., on the other end of the spectrum, is all about "MOMMY!" In her world, Mommy has a couple of different meanings:

1. "Mommy"- Hey, I need your attention.
2. "MoMEEEEEE!"- Oh, I haven't seen you in a while.
3. "MoMEEEEEE! MoMEEEEEE! MoMEEEEEE! MoMEEEEEE!"- I want something.
This option can be directed to anyone and is not limited to me.

On the potty subject, A.E. is becoming increasingly aware of her bodily functions. She has gone three times today IN THE POTTY. No ACCIDENTS, yet...

(UPDATE: Six pee-pees in the potty, one accident during naptime, and zero poopies.)

Last week, I may have mentioned (or not) that there is nothing worse than a tantrum in a bathtub full of water. Yesterday, I found out what IS worse.

A tantrum whilst peeing on the potty. Five minutes before departure for church. Yuck and even more yuck on how I reacted.

Do you ever get sick and tired of dealing with the same sin in your life like I do? I get so frustrated with myself for continuing to make THE SAME MISTAKES over and over. I pray through the situation. I am patient through the situation. Okay, I'm making a change and then, ONE MORE LITTLE THING sets me back to the sinful self. Yuck.

So this afternoon, I wanted a little more insight into my sin "problem" or "relapse" if you will. I found several scriptures from Romans that helped me feel better about myself.

I won't be perfect; however, I am dead to sin.

"By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?" (Romans 6:2)

I am born into a sinful nature; man is sinful, but Christ is my remedy.

"Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it." (Romans 7:20)

As long as I call on my own will to keep from sinning, I will not succeed. But if I call on God's will, His grace will be present and increase.

"The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more." (Romans 5:20)

The easy answer always seems to be, "Grow closer to God and your path will be straight." Why isn't it easy? Why is it so hard? Because we so often rely on ourselves and even trick ourselves into thinking, "I've given that to God" when in reality, we are still clinging to that which grips us. My sin keeps getting in the way of my growing closer to Him.

Every once in a while, though, I am in the midst of dealing with a challenging situation and I can take a step back and just laugh. Sometimes I have to laugh with my hands over my mouth like tonight when A.E. threw a tantrum because I ate a piece of food off of her plate. She was under the table. Kicking legs. Slobber everywhere. Yes, I have a child who slobbers in a tantrum-like state. She kept on saying, "Just spit it out!"

"I'm sorry honey, I swallowed it already."

"BUT it was my perfect food!"

Crazy to hear from the child who won't eat. She would rather sit on the potty now than eat. Thankfully, we moved on. Unfortunately, the crazy dog jumped up on the table and ate the rest of the food on her plate. NO JOKE. I thought he might suffer A.E.'s wrath and she might cry, kick and slobber on him, but crisis averted.

Thank you to the Popcorn Ball from our party favor bag. Yesterday, we went to a birthday for sweet Shepherd who accompanied us to the Farmer's Market last week. Fun was had by all and the Popcorn Ball saved the day until...

The crazy dog ate it, too.

That poor sinner...

Fun in the Backyard

So yesterday's plans for getting outdoors and doing something fun happened today! Taking both the girls out to the pool has gotten much less stressful and disorganized than when I first began doing this on my own. I figured out a few tricks-of-the-trade:

1. If H.J. crawls out of the pool repeatedly, it's time for the swing for her until she's ready to stay in and have fun.
2. If Bailey gets in the pool, get him out quickly! Nothing like dog claws tearin' up the family pond!
3. If A.E. won't come inside after all the fun, go ahead and strip the other kid down. Nothing like a contest to see who can get naked faster!
4. Only allow pool time post-naps! Those slow-to-wake kids wake up really fast when posed with the option of doing something F-U-N. Plus, you are less likely to have to apply sunscreen in the late afternoon. Bonus: throw in a bar of soap at the end and call it bathtime. JUST KIDDING.
5. During the aforementioned naps, fill pool with water. Allow water to warm in the sun for the three hour naptime. Nothing like shivering kids in 98 degree weather who won't stay in and HAVE FUN.
6. Assemble all post-pool diapers and attire during naptime. Keep near pool. No need to bring a bunch of wet kids and dog into the semi-clean house.

That's all I can think of...until next our pool day!

***UPDATE*** Bailey is OK. The only sign that something happened to him is the fashionable shavings he got on each of his front legs. I'm sure he was the life of the party over at Cobb Emergency Veterinary Clinic. Today, I got to meet with Bailey's regular vet, and we discussed adding another medication to Bailey's daily regime. I also learned how to rectally administer valium in the event of another Grand Mal Seizure. F-U-N! Didn't I recently post about F-U-N doctor appointments? hee hee

The Crazy Dog

Bailey's Irish Dream

Didn't you know this post was coming? I've mentioned him before, but now you can put a face to the craziness. We have a beautiful chocolate lab named Bailey. He is six-years-old. For the past six years he has been an incredible pal. He was born on April 5, 2002 (one day before C. and I got married, and coincidentally, on my father-in-law's birthday). Because I used to teach high school, we thought the timing to get him would be perfect. As soon as school got out for the summer, Bailey's Irish Dream (his pedigree name, wink, wink) was ready to leave his birth mama and come home with us. The plan was that since I would be home all day I could be with him 24 hours a day to make sure he was properly trained before it was time for me to go back to work in the fall. After a couple of months, Bailey was really catching on.

One of the funniest things that Bailey learned to do was to stay right next to my side all day long. I figured if he was right next to me, I would know what he was doing. He wouldn't be off in the corner or other room chewing on something or peeing inside. Now, six years later, if you get up to walk to the fridge, he comes with you. If you get up to walk to the bathroom, he comes with you. If you get up to do anything, even if he is dead asleep, he wakes up, and he comes with you. My in-laws can attest to that. They have taken care of him almost every time we've ever been out of town. C.'s mom is an animal lover and would not hear of us taking good ole Bailey to a kennel. Thanks, Nana!

When Bailey was just a few months old, he began having seizures. After a series of blood tests at the vet's office, we put Bailey on a dose of Phenobarbital and kept track of when and how long the seizures were. He would go for periods of time with no seizures at all, then he would have a couple in one week. This pattern has been happening for about six years now, but 2 and 1/2 weeks ago, Bailey had an episode like no other. It was almost 3 hours of in and out of seizures. My husband, as luck would have it, was out on the golf course. Fine if you live on one, but he and his friends got a good deal on a course AN HOUR AWAY. I can take care of him and two kids fine if he has a 5, even 10 minute seizure, but 3 hours of convulsing and salivating (I needed a new pair of shorts when he was done!) at the girls' bedtime was not working! Of course Bailey was fine when Daddy got home.

So this afternoon, I took to heart my post from yesterday and set up a fun-filled activity time in the backyard for the girls after naptime. The pool was full, the sprinkler was set (you don't work for the water people, do you?) and the sand box was uncovered with the umbrella raised and ready for action. Bailey had a different plan. He went into another episode like the one 2 and 1/2 weeks ago. C. was again unavailable due to work issues. Luckily, my awesome, do-anything-for-you in-laws were available to come watch the girls for me so I could take Bailey to the doctor. And that is where he is right now for overnight observation. I am praying he is alright and we'll see his normal doctor tomorrow.

So the pictures of our fun-filled afternoon will come later. H.J.'s a hoot in the pool, and all A.E. wants to do is water the driveway with her watering can with water from the pool. I hope Bailey can sleep tonight on that cold, hard concrete floor, poor thing. And I hope I don't get any calls from the hospital tonight...
